3. Appliances

  • Size and Placement: Measure the dimensions of all major appliances, including the refrigerator, stove, oven, dishwasher, and microwave. Consider their placement to ensure a functional workflow.

  • Clearances: Ensure there are adequate clearances around appliances for doors to open fully and for proper ventilation. For example, the refrigerator needs space for the door to swing open, and the stove requires clearance on both sides for safety.

4. Cabinetry

  • Base Cabinets: Standard base cabinets are usually 24 inches deep and 34.5 inches high. Measure the length of wall space where base cabinets will be installed.

  • Upper Cabinets: Standard upper cabinets are typically 12 inches deep. Measure from the countertop to the ceiling to determine the height available for upper cabinets.

  • Clearance: Ensure there is at least 18 inches of clearance between the countertop and the bottom of the upper cabinets.

5. Countertops

  • Height and Depth: Standard countertop height is 36 inches, and depth is 25.5 inches. Measure the length of countertop space required, considering areas around the sink and appliances.

  • Overhang: If you plan to have a countertop overhang for seating, ensure it extends 12-15 inches to provide comfortable legroom.

6. Work Triangle

  • Distances: The work triangle involves the sink, stove, and refrigerator. The sum of the distances between these points should be between 12 and 26 feet. Each leg of the triangle should be between 4 and 9 feet to ensure efficiency and ease of movement.

Bathroom Layout Design

  • Vanities and Cabinets: Measure the dimensions of vanities and storage cabinets. Ensure they fit well within the space without obstructing movement.

  • Shelving: Plan for shelving heights and depths that accommodate toiletries and towels. Standard shelving is typically 12 inches deep and 15-20 inches apart.

4. Lighting and Electrical

  • Fixture Placement: Measure and plan for the placement of light fixtures to ensure even lighting throughout the bathroom. Consider task lighting around the vanity and ambient lighting for the entire room.

  • Outlets: Ensure there are sufficient electrical outlets placed at convenient locations, such as near the vanity and beside the toilet for bidet functionality.

5. Ventilation

  • Fans and Vents: Measure and plan for proper ventilation to prevent moisture buildup. Ensure exhaust fans are appropriately sized for the bathroom and positioned to remove humid air effectively.
